Southwest Monsoon Onset Over South Coastal Saurashtra With Very Heavy Rainfall

Current Weather Conditions on 16th June 2014 @ 2.00 pm.

Heavy to extremely heavy Rainfall occurred over South Coastal Saurashtra regions yesterday on the onset of Southwest Monsoon. Here below are rainfall figures in mm. for period ending 16th June 2014 till 8.30 am.

The cyclonic circulation over northeast Arabian Sea and neighborhood now lies over northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat coast between 1.5 & 3.6 kms a.s.l. Strong winds from the Arabian Sea are blowing over Saurashtra, so moisture incursion over Saurashtra is taking place.

The off shore trough at mean sea level from south Gujarat coast to north Kerala coast persists.

The cyclonic circulation over northeast Bay of Bengal and neighborhood persists and extends up to 3.1 kms a.s.l

The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) continues to pass through Lat. 21 °N /Long. 60° E, Lat. 21° N / Long. 65 ° E, Veraval, Surat, Sangli, Bellary, Nandyal, Bapatla, Lat.18°N / Long. 86°E, Lat.22°N / Long.90°E,Cooch Behar and Gangtok. Conditions are becoming favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of interior Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, remaining parts of Bay of Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar during next 3-4 days.

Forecast: 16th June to 18th June

Monsoon already set in over Coastal Saurashtra & South Gujarat yesterday. In reality Monsoon has covered Junagadh District, Porbandar District and adjoining parts of Rajkot District and Coastal areas of Amreli District. Conditions good for the above areas so can expect rain during the Forecast period.

Conditions will be favorable on 16th/17th June for rest of Saurashtra for getting rain. The rain quantum will be less compared to the amounts that South Coastal Areas of Saurashtra received.

General rain quantum for Saurashtra will decrease from 18th June onwards.
