Hot Weather To Continue Over Gujarat Along With Many Parts Of Other States

Current Weather Conditions on 2nd May 2013 @ 10.30 am.

The Maximum Temperature over Saurashtra, Kutch & Gujarat has remained around 2 Degrees C. above normal yesterday over many hot spots of Gujarat. Rajkot recorded 42.0 C. and while Ahmedabad was 42.9 C., both being 2 Degrees C. above normal from their respective normals at this time of the year. Amreli however, recorded 43.0 C. which is about 3 C. above normal.

Maximum Temperature over some hot spots of Vidarbha yesterday at Nagpur was 45.4 C. and Akola at 45.0 C. while at Allahbad in U.P. was 44.7 C. There were quite a few scattered places having recorded 43.0 C. plus Maximum temperatures over India.

Criteria for Heat Wave:

Heat wave need not be considered till maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40º C for Plains and at least 30º C for Hilly regions.

a) When normal maximum temperature of a station is less than or equal to 40º C
Heat Wave Departure from normal is 5º C to 6º C. Severe Heat Wave Departure from normal is 7º C or more

b) When normal maximum temperature of a station is more than 40º C Heat Wave Departure from normal is 4º C to 5º C. Severe Heat Wave Departure from normal is 6º C or more

c) When actual maximum temperature remains 45ºC or more irrespective of normal maximum temperature, heat wave should be declared.

Forecast: 2nd May to 6th May

Saurashtra, Kutch & Gujarat:

The Maximum Temperature over most non-coastal places of Saurashtra & Kutch would remain above normal and is expected to be about 41 to 43 C. range during the forecast period. Similarly the Maximum Temperature over most places of North and Central Gujarat would remain above normal and is expected to be about 42 to 44 C. range during the forecast period. The winds over most parts of Saurashtra will be mainly from the westerly direction. The morning humidity is expected to increase from 4th to 6th May.

Rest of India: 2nd to 9th May

The hot weather areas for 2nd to 4th May would be some parts of Vidarbha, West Bengal and small pockets of Chhatishgarh, Orissa & U.P.

Major portion of U.P.will be under hot weather on 5th & 6th May along with small pockets of Chhatishgarh & Orissa. Subsequently on 7th to 9th May the hot weather area will spread over a very large area stretching form Vidarbha, M.P. to U.P., Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Chhatishgarh & some parts of North Andhra Pradesh.

A week ahead outlook:

As per GSF forecast model there is a possibility of a Low Pressure System developing around 7th or 8th May in the Bay of Bengal vicinity West or Southwest of Sri Lanka. Currently the forecast strength, track and duration of this system is very erratic and would be much more clear within 48 hours. A mirror image Low Pressure System will also develop below the Equator at 5 S. during the same period.
