Cyclonic Storm “MADI” Over Southwest Bay Of Bengal

Current Weather Conditions on 8th December 2013 @ 2.00 pm.

From IMD Bulletin No.: BOB08/2013/05 issued at 0900 hours IST Dated 07-12-2013 pertaining to Cyclonic storm ‘MADI’ over Southwest Bay of Bengal.
The deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved northward, intensified into a cyclonic storm, ‘MADI’ and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of 07 December 2013 over southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 10.50 0 N and longitude 84.00 0 E, about 500 km southeast of Chennai and 370 km northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka). It would intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hours. It would move nearly northwards very slowly during next 48 hrs and then recurve north-northeastwards.

Under the influence of this system, rainfall at a few places would occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 24 hrs. Rainfall at many places with isolated heavy falls would occur over Andaman and Nicobar Island during next 48 hours.
Fishermen along and off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts are advised to be cautious while venturing into sea and should not venture into deep sea.

 

JTWC has issued Cyclone Warning No. 5 for 06B.SIX located near Lat. 10.4N. & Long. 83.8 E. with winds speeds of 45 knots ( on 1 minute average wind speed basis). However, latest location is Lat. 10.4N & Long 84.3 E. with 55 knots winds and Central Pressure of 982 Mb. at 0630 UTC.

Forecast:
Tropical Cyclone “MADI” is expected to track mainly Northwards for the next three days and is expected to track back Southwestwards towards Sri Lanka  / South Tamilnadu Coastal areas from 11th onwards for the next few days. Both ECMWF as well as GFS 0000z Forecast runs of 7th December concur with the above scenario but it could pan out with a 24 hour difference between the two models.
