As had been forecast here on 16th March 2015 that the Temperature will rise speedily from below normal to above normal over Saurashtra, Gujarat & Kutch and that the Maximum Temperature will cross 40 C by 23rd March, the Maximum Temperature crossed 40 C on Saturday the 21st March. On Sunday the Maximum Temperature had reached 41.3 C at Surendranagar & Kandala (Airport). There was Heat Wave conditions in pockets of Saurashtra, Gujarat & Kutch.
From IMD – Criteria for Heat Wave:
Heat wave need not be considered till maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40ºC for Plains and at least 30ºC for Hilly regions.
a) When normal maximum temperature of a station is less than or equal to 40ºC Heat Wave Departure from normal is 5ºC to 6ºC Severe Heat Wave Departure from normal is 7ºC or more
b) When normal maximum temperature of a station is more than 40º C Heat Wave Departure from normal is 4ºC to 5ºC Severe Heat Wave Departure from normal is 6ºC or more
c) When actual maximum temperature remains 45ºC or more irrespective of normal maximum temperature, heat wave should be declared.

Saurashtra, Kutch & Gujarat:
The Temperature is expected to remain high and some pockets of Saurashtra, Kutch & Gujarat will experience Heat Wave Conditions during the Forecast period. The Maximum Temperatures for most hot centers will be in the range of 40C to 42C. However, there is strong possibility of Maximum Temperature to cross 42 C at some places during the Forecast period.
