{"id":11429,"date":"2016-04-20T18:05:27","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T12:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gujaratweather.com\/wordpress\/?p=11429"},"modified":"2023-06-25T09:04:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-25T03:34:42","slug":"noaa-introduced-version-ersst-v4-from-june-2015-instead-of-version-ersst-v3b-for-sst-departures-resulting-in-changes-to-many-historical-enso-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gujaratweather.com\/?p=11429","title":{"rendered":"NOAA Introduced Version ERSST.v4 From June 2015 Instead Of Version ERSST.v3b For SST Departures &#8211; Resulting In Changes To Many Historical ENSO Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Update 20th April 2016<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Here is a discussion about the effects of NOAA introduction of \u00a0ERSST.v4 instead of earlier version ERSST.vb3.<\/h3>\n<h3>Later part deals with the latest status of the current El Nino event.<br \/>\nCurrent status: A strong El Nino which is now declining.<\/h3>\n<h3>NOAA introduced new version ERSST.v4 from June 2015 instead of their earlier version ERSST.v3b SST departures, resulting in changes to many historical ENSO events including the current El Nino event (El Nino, La Nina, Enso Neutral).<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>As an example see how it has affected the current El Nino event. We know that a Full fledged El Nino was confirmed at the end of March 2015 when the five consecutive 3 month running mean based on ERSST.v3b SST anomalies in the Ni\u00f1o 3.4 region (5<sup>o<\/sup>N-5<sup>o<\/sup>S, 120<sup>o<\/sup>-170<sup>o<\/sup>W) had ONI index of +0.5 C or higher. See <a href=\"https:\/\/vmi2318806.contaboserver.net\/?page_id=7894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my last year&#8217;s update of 7th April 2015<\/a>\u00a0part of it reproduced in <strong>bold<\/strong> here under:<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>El Nino Status on 7th April 2015 (Last Year)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Full fledged El Nino was confirmed only at the end of March 2015 when the five consecutive 3 monthly seasons had ONI index of 0.5 C or higher. Incidentally it has barely made it to a full fledged El nino. The March SST for Nino 3-4 region is 27.72 C. Defined as the three-month running-mean SST departures in the Ni\u00f1o 3.4 region. Departures were based on\u00a0ERSST.v3b till June 2015 and from then on wards are now based on a set of improved homogeneous historical SST analyses (Extended Reconstructed SST \u2013 ERSST.v4). The SST reconstruction methodology is described in Huang et al., 2015, J. Climate, vol. 28, 911-930.).<\/h3>\n<h3>NOAA Operational Definitions for El Ni\u00f1o and La Ni\u00f1a El Ni\u00f1o: characterized by a positive ONI greater than or equal to +0.5\u00baC. La Ni\u00f1a: characterized by a negative ONI less than or equal to -0.5\u00baC. By historical standards, to be classified as a full-fledged El Ni\u00f1o or La Ni\u00f1a episode, these thresholds must be exceeded for a period of at least 5 consecutive overlapping 3-month seasons.<\/h3>\n<h3>CPC considers El Ni\u00f1o or La Ni\u00f1a conditions to occur when the monthly Ni\u00f1o3.4 OISST departures meet or exceed +\/- 0.5\u00baC along with consistent atmospheric features. These anomalies must also be forecast to persist for 3 consecutive months.<\/h3>\n<h3>Due to the adoption of\u00a0SST departures from average in the Ni\u00f1o 3.4 region which is now\u00a0based on a set of improved homogeneous historical SST analyses (Extended Reconstructed SST \u2013 ERSST.v4), the El Nino declared at the end of March 2015 went bust. Subsequently the current El Nino event was confirmed at the end of August 2015. The graph below shows that currently, a\u00a0strong El Nino persists till March 2016, the last available 3 monthly season being JFM 2016. The details of past ENSO events can be compared as per current ERSST.v4 and earlier ERSST.v3b available\u00a0here\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/ensostuff\/ensoyears.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ERSST.v4<\/a>\u00a0and here\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/ensostuff\/ensoyears_ERSSTv3b.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ERSST.v3b<\/a>. However, as per\u00a0DESCRIPTION: Warm (red) and cold (blue) periods based on a threshold of +\/- 0.5<sup>o<\/sup>C for the Oceanic Ni\u00f1o Index (ONI) [3 month running mean of ERSST.v4 SST anomalies in the Ni\u00f1o 3.4 region (5<sup>o<\/sup>N-5<sup>o<\/sup>S, 120<sup>o<\/sup>-170<sup>o<\/sup>W)], based on\u00a0(click the link for details)\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/ensostuff\/ONI_change.shtml\">centered 30-year base periods updated every 5 years<\/a>\u00a0.<\/h3>\n<h3>The update of Climatology should have been done in the beginning of 2016 to 30 year base period of 1986-2015. \u00a0As and when the Climatology base year is updated, there will be some changes to ONI values of the most recent decades and may affect classification of ENSO events of the most recent decades.<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>ENSO Outlook<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>An alert system for the El Ni\u00f1o\u2013Southern Oscillation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Issued by BOM -Australian Government on 12th April 2016<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Increased chance of La Ni\u00f1a by spring 2016 (Southern Hemisphere)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"title\"><\/h3>\n<div id=\"headline\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"box-notice\">\n<div class=\"block-66 float-right xprint-block-100\">\n<div id=\"overviewContent\">\n<div id=\"overviewCommentary\">\n<h3>The ENSO Outlook is now at La Ni\u00f1a WATCH. While the current El Ni\u00f1o is expected to persist until late autumn or early winter, there are early signs that the chance of a La Ni\u00f1a developing by spring 2016\u00a0(Southern Hemisphere)\u00a0has increased.<\/h3>\n<h3>The La Ni\u00f1a WATCH criteria have been met following expert assessment of the steady cooling in the surface and sub-surface of the tropical Pacific Ocean and updated model outlooks indicating increased likelihood of cooling to La Ni\u00f1a thresholds by spring\u00a0(Southern Hemisphere)\u00a02016.<\/h3>\n<h3>A La Ni\u00f1a WATCH means that there is approximately a 50% chance of a La Ni\u00f1a developing in 2016, which is about twice the normal likelihood.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>Southern Oscillation Index<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"block-50\">\n<h3>The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) is in the negative territory from June end 2015 till date mostly in negative zone \u00a0(-7.0 or less) with a brief neutral zone in November 2015 ( -5.3) and March 2016 (-4.7).
