Cyclone “MAHASEN” To Make Landfall Today Over Bangla Desh After Sunset

Current Weather Conditions on 16th May 2013 @ 9.30 am.

Cyclonic Storm “MAHASEN” has entered the Northeast Bay Of Bengal current location 20.9 N. & 90.3 E. with winds speeds of 50 knots ( 93 Kms/hour on one minute average basis) with Central Pressure 985 Mb. The System has strengthened once again by 5 knots during the past 6 hours. The current location is about 100 Kms. South of the Balga Desh Delta and 275 Kms. Southeast of Kolkata and about 220 Kms. to Landfall on the Eastern Bangla Desh Coast. Major portion of the convective clouds associated with this System are over land spread over West Bengal and Bangala Desh Delta. However, the System Center is located on the periphery of the cloud mass. Landfall expected at around 1400 UTC (7.30 pm.) Update may be given latter today.

As per RSMC/IMD Bulletin No. BOB 01/2013/29 issued at 0830 hours IST dated 16-05-2013 the cyclonic storm MAHASEN over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved northeastwards during past 6 hours at a speed of about 25 kmph and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of 16th May 2013 near latitude 20.00  N and longitude 89.50  E over northwest Bay of Bengal, about 990 km north-northwest of Portblair, 310 km south-southeast of Kolkata, 300 km east of Paradip and 360 km southwest of Chittagong. It would move northeastwards and cross Bangladesh coast near Chittagong during night of 16th May 2013.

Under the influence of this system, Rainfall at most places with isolated heavy falls would occur over South Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland during next 36 hours.
Strong wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph would prevail along and off north Odisha coast and wind speed 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph would prevail along and off West Bengal coast during next 24 hours.
Squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph would prevail over South Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland commencing from today, the 16thth May 2013 evening/night for subsequent 24 hours.
Fishermen along and off Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coasts are advised to be cautious while venturing into sea during next 36 hrs.
